  • Introduction

    Welcome to off-Grounds Housing.

The purpose of this office is to assist UVa students in all aspects of making the decision to move off-Grounds, and to support those students who live off-Grounds. This brochure will be a work in process. Existing material will be changed or deleted as necessary and new material will be added based on student review and input.

Here are some things to be taken in to consideration in making the decision to move off-Grounds:

What do you want from your living experience?

  • Are you looking for a community?
  • Do you want privacy?
  • Do you expect to have a place to study? Relax?
  • What amenities are important to you?
  • Who do you want to live with?
Friends don't always make good roommates? Examine the criteria for both!
Visit the University Mediation Services website and go over the Roommate Agreement. Reach agreements before signing your lease on issues including: cleanliness, chores, visitors and noise. http://www.student.virginia.edu/~mediate/news.htm

Where do you want to live?
Consider the basics of location: parking, getting to/from class, noise, neighbors, personal safety

How much will it cost and how much can you afford?
Consider these estimated costs for the 04-05 school year:
    Rent:

  • 1 bedroom range: $300 – 1250 average: $610
  • 2 bedroom range: 560 – 1300 average: 790 ($395/room)
  • 3 bedroom range: 765 – 1750 average: 1140 ($380/room)
  • 4 bedroom range: 925 – 3000 average: 1760 ($441/room)

  • Utilities:
  • Water/Sewer/Trash Often included in apts., not in houses.
  • Electric/Gas Apt. $50-100/mo; House $75-175/mo
  • Cable $45/mo (basic cable)
  • Phone $30/mo (basic service)
  • When do you need to look and decide?
You'll hear this a lot, but there is no housing shortage in Charlottesville. You really need to have the answers to the questions above before you consider signing the lease, which is a legally binding document
